Kansas City Chiefs…Hoping For a Winning Season

In 1959, after unsuccessful attempts to gain an expansion team from the NFL, Lamar Hunt decided to start the American Football League and established the Dallas Texans as one of the first teams. Their third season was the first for the AFL Championship Game and the Texans won against the Houston Oilers in double overtime. The game still holds the record for the longest professional football game in history. 1963 came and the Dallas Texans moved to become the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Chiefs quickly became one of the most successful teams in the AFL, winning three championship games, which was a record. They also had the most playoff appearances for an AFL team.

After the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, the Kansas City Chiefs only enjoyed two winning seasons, one in 1971, and the other in 1973. The rest of the decade was a disaster for the team, as they went through one coach after another trying to make things work.

In 1989, the Kansas City Chiefs finally managed some success, and for the next several years made it to the playoffs several times. Unfortunately, they could not hold it together and since then have had many losing seasons. Despite this, they never give up, coming back every year for more, one day hoping to achieve their former glory.

The Kansas City Chiefs play their home games at Arrowhead Stadium, which seats more than 79,000 people. The stadium sold out every single home game from 1991 to 2007, and is the fourth largest NFL stadium when it comes to seating capacity. The stadium is now slated for renovations, which are due to be completed by the end of the year 2011.

Off the field, the Kansas City Chiefs are very active in their community. Between monetary donations, autographed items, and time, the Chiefs do plenty to support and assist those less fortunate than themselves. Since 1990, more than 60 players have even started their own charitable organizations and foundations.

The Kansas City Chiefs have a wonderful bunch of women on the sidelines cheering them on. But being a Kansas City Cheerleader is about more than just showing up to games. They also help in the community and have done their variety show on military bases both at home and all over the world. Their show was even recognized as being one of the best performed by an NFL cheerleading squad by the Department of Defense.

Although not the top ranked team in the league, the Kansas City Chiefs are always entertaining. You never know what you’re going to get when you go to a Chiefs game.
